The default option is for the notes to arpeggiate every 1/16th note. When it is enabled, you’ll hear the arpeggiation effect. If the play button is not selected (highlighted orange) then it’s in bypass mode, and you’ll hear the normal chords you played.

You’ll see a window that looks like this. Now go into the MIDI FX option on the channel strip and select Arpeggiator. Go ahead and play a 4 or 8 bar progression that you can use for this example (or just hold down one chord for a long time if you prefer.) Usually there’s also a not selection option, so you can play it faster than a human possibly could. Unlike a human, it’ll play it in perfect timing (maybe too perfect) every time.
