The default option is for the notes to arpeggiate every 1/16th note. When it is enabled, you’ll hear the arpeggiation effect. If the play button is not selected (highlighted orange) then it’s in bypass mode, and you’ll hear the normal chords you played.
You’ll see a window that looks like this. Now go into the MIDI FX option on the channel strip and select Arpeggiator. Go ahead and play a 4 or 8 bar progression that you can use for this example (or just hold down one chord for a long time if you prefer.) Check out this article if you need help with chord progression generation. I’ll use the built in Vintage Electric Piano, as it has no arpeggiator built in.

Logic Pro X has an arpeggiator built in that can be used on any midi track, even a drum track! And while many soft synths have an arpeggiator built in, not all do, and typically a piano/electric piano emulator won’t.įirst create a new session, select Software Instrument, and pick an instrument of your choice. Usually there’s also a not selection option, so you can play it faster than a human possibly could. Unlike a human, it’ll play it in perfect timing (maybe too perfect) every time.
This makes life easier for keyboard players (and has launched countless one-finger keyboard virtuosos.) Essentially you hold down a chord, and the arpeggiator will rotate through the chord using the selected algorithm.
Many physical keyboards, and as a result soft synths, have arpeggiator functions built in. (Heavily used in Classical Music, and only outdone by the usage in Ballads by 80’s Hair Metal bands.) Arpeggios, if you aren’t familiar with the term, is essentially playing a chord one note at a time, also called a broken chord. In this Logic Pro X Tutorial we are going to focus on the Arpeggiator. One of the cool features (a freebie if you will) of Logic Pro X is the MIDI FX options.
